Mutemath at the Basement East, Nashville, TN 10/2/2015

I’m a creature of habit. Whatever it is, a new sport, a new videogame, a new book, or hobby–my first instinct will be to resist. Which is why the Mutemath album I purchased got lost in a hard drive full of music for four years before 2009 came along. I went with a group to see them on the Armistice tour at the then Nokia Theater in Times Square, New York City. That’s where it finally clicked and I understood.

This band is ridiculous.

The whole theater got their faces rocked off.

I went again in 2012 with the same group to the same venue, now the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, New York for the Odd Soul Tour. That’s where I realized, that I really didn’t fully understand back in 2009.

Fast forward to October 2, 2015. I live in Nashville now and I’ve had tickets to see them at the Basement East for months. It’s a smaller venue, but not too intimate. A long bar, a small stage and a little VIP section surround a pretty big floor. I spot my friend Christy who is already shooting the opening act, The Quiet Entertainer, a local DJ opening for Mutemath on their US tour.

I get my Nikkor SC 50mm prime on my Nikon D7000 and start walking around the room.

Once The Quiet Entertainer finished his set I walked around to the other side of the stage and parked right up next to the drum kit and waited.

My patience was rewarded.

I switched to my 28-300mm zoom at some point to get real tight. I tried to keep the ISO down below 2000, but at 300mm it can’t open up wider than 5.6. Also rocking handheld at that focal length in low light inevitably produces a lot of motion blur despite how high you crank your shutter speed. I recommend just constantly shooting and making sure you get the shot while juggling shutter and ISO wide open.
