It’s been a minute. I’ve been shooting a lot of film lately. Just 35mm for now on my Nikkormat FTn, though I’m planning to plunge into medium format soon. I was given the challenge to shoot something other than what I get from Walgreens (Fuji Superia 400) so I went to bandh.com and went down the list.  I loaded up some Kodak Ektar 100 and a roll of Superia 400 (because I’m a creature of habit), along with my Nikkor SC 50mm lens and headed out to an Instameet in Murfreesboro.

I had been shooting some Ilford Delta 3200 the night before and I had some leftover to shoot during the day. It was a gorgeous sunny spring day in February so I anticipated a ton of grain.

To be fair, I got a lot of grain, but I still really like the character it gives these shots.

The trade off from the grain is that I can set the shutter to be incredibly fast and capture the moment a sudden gust of wind makes Sulli here burst into laughter as her hair goes flying.

Shooting Ektar was a lot of fun and I love the cinematic look I get from this film.

Sometimes I intentionally go about getting goofy candids and sometimes the subject just decides to waste my exposure by cracking up right as I click the shutter. Alex is one of these.

Love the way Ektar brings out tones in the skin and makes that water look glorious. Also crazy bokeh all over the place.

We tried to help John out by setting up an instagram account called thenashvillebachelor featuring our favorite pictures of him with quotes that would cause the ladies to all come running, he made us take it down.

So a rather successful day, I think. There’s something about shooting film that heightens the level of my craft. I learn constantly from digital photography, but sometimes slowing down and limiting oneself to a particular stock with only 36 exposures, creates the necessary pressure to propel forward creatively. Also, I’m biased, but it’s WAY prettier y’all. Shoot film.
